Dr. Vliet’s Health Tip: Hantavirus: COVID Playbook 2.0? Truth About Your Risk

© by Elizabeth Lee Vliet MD and Kathy Kresnik

The heavily hyped Hantavirus has been dominating the headlines, in a repeat of the “COVID Playbook” used in 2020 and an organized campaign clearly designed to again create fear and panic. There is already talk about mandatory PCR testing, breathless reports of every new “case” (based on positive unreliable PCR test, not actual definitive diagnostic testing), intense (and mostly exaggerated) media talking heads speculating about our risks, as well as minute by minute updates on the status and prognosis of the currently infected.

Given that the actual risk of the rodent-spread Hantavirus is miniscule to the average American who does not live in a rodent-infested home, I think all this is just more calculated fear-mongering to creat panic, just in time for the midterm election season.  This is the same distraction fear campaign used in the election year of 2020, and we are seeing it rolled out again, as if we are so stupid we learned nothing from how we were all manipulated through fear during COVID.

Fortunately, more than 60% of Americans, according to polls just this past week, think the government lied to us during COVID – exactly as I and our TFH medical team have been reporting since my first editorials on COVID deception in March 2020.  I have continued to write about the government cover ups, lies and deception ever since then, and as we learn more and more from courageous whistleblowers coming forward, there is now unequivocal confirmation of everything I have warned about since 2020.  I have also been teaching my patients and readers simple and effective prevention and treatment options for COVID, as well as other viral & atypical bacterial illnesses.

It turns out that Hantavirus, IF it occurs, can be treated with the cheap, safe combination effective for COVID—hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin, vitamin D, zinc, Vitamin C, NAC and quercetin.  This combination of older, repurposed Rx medicines plus natural medicines and vitamins shows far more promise and effectiveness than the experimental Hantavirus “vaccine” injection promoted in the media by Big Pharma and the government bureaucrats.  This safe, cheap and effective combination seems to be exactly what the fear-mongering media does NOT want you to know about for Hantavirus.

But this is the approach I plan to take for myself and my patients in the remote chance that a Hantavirus illness arises.  So that’s the reason I wanted to share this approach in today’s health tip.

It is important to understand the basic facts and revisit our tried and true viral protocols and treatments.

My most important message to you is: Don’t panic. Be wise and be prepared for any and all viral threats, not just the remote chance of Hantavirus.

What is Hantavirus?
Viruses are categorized based on their genetic material. Hantavirus is in a class of viruses called single stranded RNA (ssRNA) viruses. This group  includes all the COVID strains, influenza viruses, Respiratory Synctial virus (RSV), Marburg virus, Ebola virus, and Hantavirus. These are all ssRNA viruses that use a common pathway in making copies of their genetic material.

Hantaviruses are a zoonotic infection, which means an infectious disease that can be naturally spread between animals and humans, usually from animals to people. The term comes from Greek roots for “animal” (zôon) and “disease” (nosos). These infections are caused by germs such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi, or prions that move between vertebrate animals (like mammals and birds) and humans, usually via animal saliva, urine or feces contamination.

Public health agencies like WHO and CDC use “zoonosis” or “zoonotic disease” for any disease that is naturally transmissible from animals to humans or from humans back to animals. Examples include rabies, some influenza strains, Lyme disease, and now in the headlines – Hantavirus.

Key Hantavirus Facts (from the CDC):

  • Hantavirus is primarily spread to humans through contact with the droppings, urine, or saliva of infected rodents (specifically deer mice).
  • Human to human transmission is rare and requires prolonged close contact with symptomatic persons. Hantaviruses are only contagious when symptoms (flu-like) are present.
  • Annual Causes & Deaths: Fewer than 30 cases are reported annually in the U.S.  Only 890 total reported cases in thirty years since surveillance began in 1993.
  • Mortality Rate: Roughly 35% of reported cases in the U.S. result in death (Dr. Vliet’s comment: usually from failure to recognize, correctly diagnose and treat quickly when symptoms develop. But with only an average of 30 cases a year in the U.S., that is a small number of deaths, which I think can be reduced with earlier recognition, diagnosis and treatment.
  • High-Risk Areas: Most cases occur in rural areas, particularly in the Western U.S. (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico).

It is not that there is no risk to humans or that mortality is not a concern at all – it is that transmission to humans is rare, your actual risk is extremely low, there is effective treatment, and the chance of a global pandemic highly unlikely.  Current hype is way overblown. Just stay away from rat-infested landfills…and keep a cat on the prowl if you live in a rural area with a lot of rodents!

Moving Forward with Common Sense to Avoid Panic

PCR tests are being used to “identify Hantavirus cases.” But a positive test does NOT mean someone sick with the actual illness.  You must remember that Dr. Kary Mullis, the founder of the PCR test, himself said that PCR tests were never intended to be used as diagnostic tests. PCR tests are not reliable for diagnosis, not specific for a particular virus, and can lead to large numbers of false positive results. Recall that during COVID, when PCR tests were mandated in many settings and heavily pushed across the country, we had 80-85% false positive tests! These false positives were then used during COVID in destructive ways to admit people unnecessarily to hospitals being paid extra incentives to follow deadly COVID “treatment” protocols.  So when my patients ask, “Do I need a PCR Test?” my answer is NO.

What about a vaccine?  Again, my answer is NO! A zoonotic infection requires vaccination of the carrier host animal. Vaccinating humans is useless.  So that means for a vaccine to help prevent Hantavirus in people, you would have to vaccinate ALL rodents! Clearly, that is and impossible and completely unrealistic task, and NOT a medically sound mass protection strategy.  For more details on this aspect, check out the posts from an well qualified expert, Dr. Martin Zizi on X @MartinZ_uncut.

Are there prescription medicines that could be used for Hantavirus?  Since Hantavirus is also in the same group of ssRNA viruses as COVID, we can look to the old, safe, repurposed medicines we used in COVID: hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin, in particular, as well as other antivirals we have used for years.  The WHO claims ivermectin “doesn’t work” on Hantavirus. But ivermectin has shown potent antiviral activity against a massive range of RNA viruses for over a decade.  It is safe, has few side effects. Ivermectin works by blocking importin a/ß – the exact pathway Hantavirus nucleocapsid protein hijacks to shut down your immune system.  So there are plausible mechanisms to explain its potential effectiveness in Hantavirus infections.

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) prevents entry of the Hantavirus from reaching the interior of the cell.  HCQ has already shown improved survival in Andes virus animal models, and this is reported to be the same strain as the cruise ship Hantavirus outbreak carried by rodents.  HCQ acts as a zinc ionophore that transports zinc into cells, with the effect to decrease intra-cellular viral replication that leads to illness.  HCQ also has other potent overall antiviral activity and is immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory.  It has a 65+ year worldwide track record of safety and minimal side effects for short term viral illness prevention and treatment.
Ribavirin (broad-spectrum nucleoside analog) blocks the enzyme of the Hantavirus and have been found to improve survival in animal models and best when started early in human data.

BOTTOM LINE: The Good News is that treatments do exist and they are cheap, safe, and effective!

  • Treat flu-like symptoms as you normally would.
  • If bacterial infections arise treat with antibiotics such as doxycycline, azithromycin or clarithromycin.
  • Consider the above older, repurposed Rx medicines.
  • Vitamin D3 boosts innate antiviral immunity with Hantavirus
  • Zinc (inhibits viral RNA polymerase)
  • Vitamin C fights cytokine storm and vascular risk.
  • Combine these with NAC and quercetin

As Dr. Vladimir “Zev” Zelenko taught at the beginning of COVID:
“High-normal levels of vitamin D3 and intracellular zinc can eradicate most viral health threats.”

Prophylaxis Protocol for Prevention:
Generally young healthy people do not need preventive measures against common viral threats unless they have diabetes, autoimmune disorders or other chronic medical disorders. If you are over 45, you are in a higher risk category and would be wise to consider the daily preventive or prophylaxis approach I outline below. This basic anti-viral formula is the one I have recommended to my patients for many years, but especially during the COVID 19 pandemic.  I continue to recommend it for overall health and resilience. In fact, all but one of the nutraceuticals in this list are included in my Resilience Formula available through the Truth for Health store.

My message to patients is that the key is to strengthen your immune system is to take steps like these before you get sick to give your body the raw materials it needs to respond quickly, clear viruses efficiently, and avoid runaway inflammation leading to serious illness.

My preventive protocol focuses on five supplements you can buy over the counter or from our Truth for Health store: vitamin C, vitamin D3, zinc, NAC, and quercetin—each acting at a different “layer” of defense. Use them consistently, not just when you feel ill, and always in addition to (not instead of) core measures like sleep, movement, and good nutrition.

Let’s examine each one individually:

1. Vitamin C, especially our more potent and effective TruC+BioFlavonoids:
Vitamin C and Bioflavonoids together provide major antioxidant and immune boosting actions.  I take vitamin C every day and recommend it for my patients. Vitamin C + Bioflavonoids have several functions to keep frontline immune cells energized and protected:

  • neutralizes free radicals (reactive oxygen species, or ROS) that build up during infection, and this protects lung tissue and immune cells from oxidative damage.
  • supports neutrophils and macrophages so they can move to infection sites, engulf viruses, and then “switch off” cleanly, reducing collateral damage to your own tissues.
  • helps T‑cells mature and can support interferon production, which your body uses to block viral replication early.

Proactive step: Use a steady daily dose. I recommend split dosing morning and evening with meals and other supplements (especially iron, zinc, vitamin E, magnesium, Omega 3, and vitamin D) to enhance absorption and/or efficacy.  Then increase vitamin C intake modestly at the first sign of a respiratory infection, and as tolerated by your gut. Think of this as keeping your immune “batteries” charged before you need them.

Dr. Vliet’s recommendation: TruC+BioFlavonoids because it combines high-potency vitamin C with a standardized, full-spectrum, citrus bioflavonoid complex. Both vitamin C and bioflavonoids have been extensively researched for their roles in supporting antioxidant and immune function. You can read here my original health tip for TruC+BioFlavonoids For maintenance the generally accepted recommended doses are 1,000 – 2,000 mg AM and PM.

2. Vitamin D3, in particular our TruBioD3™ +K2 5000 IU in olive oil:
Vitamin D works in several ways to set your immune system’s “tone” to keep your immune system ready to respond without overreacting:

  • helps your respiratory lining cells make antimicrobial peptides (like cathelicidin and defensins) that can directly disrupt viral envelopes and support local defense in the airways.
  • shifts your immune response away from harsh, uncontrolled inflammation that drives complications like acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and moves the immune system toward a more balanced, regulated response that can clear the virus without as much collateral lung injury.

Proactive step: Get your vitamin D levels checked by a blood test to see where you are now, which helps you decide correct supplement dosing. The best test of vitamin D stores is 25 OH vitamin D. Aim to correct deficiencies or prevent low vitamin D by taking D3 regularly (ideally in olive oil for better absorption), especially in winter or if you get little sun. This is about reaching and keeping optimal vitamin D levels before you’re exposed to illnesses.

Dr. Vliet’s recommendation: TruBioD3™ which contains vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) in convenient softgels in olive oil. Vitamin D3 is the bioidentical form of vitamin D synthesized in the body from cholesterol, following activation by the UV rays in sunlight. This form is excellent for maintaining healthy levels of vitamin D in the body. Mounting evidence suggests roles for vitamin D not only in bone health, but also in supporting immune, neurological, musculoskeletal, cellular, and cardiovascular health.
Read here my original health tip for TruBioD3™. For maintenance the generally accepted recommended doses are 2,000-5000 IUs daily, or higher if your levels are deficient or lower than optimal.

3. Zinc, especially our easier-on-the-gut and better absorbed TruZinc™:
Use zinc consistently to keep your antiviral enzymes and barriers functioning, and support antiviral cellular machinery in several ways:

  • Inside cells, zinc slows down or inhibits viral RNA polymerases and viral proteases—enzymes viruses use to copy themselves and process their proteins which spreads viral infection.
  • At the tissue level, zinc supports tight junctions and membrane integrity, making it harder for viruses to penetrate and reducing local inflammation in the respiratory tract.
  • Adequate zinc is also essential for T‑cell development and NK‑cell activity, both central to clearing virus‑infected cells.

Proactive step:  Take a modest daily zinc dose (often in the 10–25 mg elemental range unless otherwise advised) with food to avoid nausea. During early infection, short‑term use of zinc lozenges can deliver higher local concentrations to the throat where many respiratory viruses first replicate.

Dr. Vliet’s recommendation: Our TFH TruZinc™ is a fully reacted, proprietary TRAACS® amino acid chelate formulated for enhanced absorption. As an essential mineral, zinc serves catalytic, structural, and regulatory functions in the body. Zinc ultimately supports immune and neurological function, growth, taste acuity, nutrient metabolism, and reproductive health.   Read my original health tip for TruZinc™ here. For maintenance the generally accepted recommended doses are 30-50 mg daily or higher if your lab tests should a deficiency.

4. NAC (N‑acetylcysteine), in particular our cGMP TruNAC™ N-Acetyl L-Cysteine:
Use NAC to maintain glutathione and protect your lungs and redox balance to reduce pulmonary inflammation.  NAC works on these steps in several ways:

  • provides cysteine, the rate‑limiting building block for producing glutathione, your body’s key intracellular antioxidant. Adequate glutathione reduces oxidative stress in lung tissue and immune cells, especially important in older adults or those with chronic disease.
  • by increasing glutathione, NAC reduces viral‑induced oxidative stress, dampens pro‑inflammatory cytokines, and makes it harder for viruses to replicate effectively.
  • acts as a mucolytic agent to break disulfide bonds in mucus. This in turn thins the mucus help it to clear more easily. This is cucial when you’re fighting a respiratory infection.

Proactive step:  Consider a daily NAC dose (commonly 600 mg once or twice daily, pending clinician guidance), especially if you have chronic respiratory issues, are older, or are under higher oxidative stress. If you take it consistently, then at early signs of illness it helps support mucus clearance and control of inflammatory processes.

Dr. Vliet’s recommendation: TruNac™ N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC) is a source of the conditionally essential amino acid L-cysteine and a precursor to the tripeptide glutathione to support antioxidant and detoxification activity in the body. NAC data shows it positively supports respiratory function and may also improve eye health, especially when you use a high quality, reliable supplement over a prolonged period of time.  Read here my original health tip for TruNac™ N-Acetyl L-Cysteine.

5. Quercetin/TruQuercetin™ 20X Plus:
Quercetin helps block viral entry and modulates inflammation to “calm the fires” created by infections. Other actions of Quercetin include:

  • binding to viral proteins and certain host receptors and enzymes, which helps interfere with viral entry and the processing of viral proteins inside cells.
  • As a polyphenolic antioxidant, it helps reduce NF‑κB activation and downstream inflammatory cytokines while supporting a more effective interferon and T‑cell response.
  • Quercetin also acts as a zinc ionophore, helping zinc get into cells where it can exert antiviral effects to reduce viral replication inside cells—so it often works best alongside zinc.

Proactive step:  Take quercetin regularly with food (and with vitamin C and zinc) to support both antiviral entry defenses and inflammatory balance. This is more useful as part of a daily “terrain support” protocol rather than a last‑minute measure.

Dr. Vliet’s recommendation: TruQuercetin™ 20X Plus is a unique scientifically formulated product designed to support the respiratory system, including nasal passages. It features Quercefit®, a highly absorbable Quercetin Phytosome™, combined with nettle extract and antioxidant compounds to target immune-system−related pathways connected to respiratory symptoms.  Read here my original health tip for TruQuercetin™ 20X Plus. For maintenance the generally accepted recommended doses are two capsules daily.

Summary: A Practical Routine to Begin Now

  • Daily baseline:
    • Vitamin C in divided doses~1000-2000 mg AM and PM
    • Vitamin D3 (dose guided by blood levels and clinician guidance)
    • Zinc at a moderate dose with food~20 mg with vitamin C
    • NAC ~ 600 mg once or twice daily
    • Quercetin once or twice daily, with vitamin C and zinc
  • At first sign of a respiratory viral infection:
    • Maintain baseline, consider modestly increasing vitamin C (to bowel tolerance)
    • Use zinc lozenges short‑term
    • Stay consistent with NAC for mucus clearance and redox support
    • Continue quercetin and vitamin D3 (avoiding megadoses unless under supervision)
    • Seek guidance from your health care professional for prescription options I mentioned above.

CAUTION: Always coordinate with a healthcare professional if you have chronic disease, take prescription medications (especially anticoagulants or immunosuppressants), or are considering higher‑than‑standard doses of supplements.

Remember: Your immune system works best when you prepare it, not when you panic and chase symptoms. So don’t wait until you’re sick and scared—use vitamin C, vitamin D3, zinc, NAC, and quercetin ahead of time to keep your defenses strong, so your body is ready to handle viruses calmly instead of going into crisis mode.

In my opinion, Hantavirus is a miniscule risk to Americans who don’t live in a rodent-infested homes! I don’t see any medical justification at all for yet another experimental “vaccine” supposedly developed to “prevent Hantavirus.”  I think we are seeing the COVID playbook dusted off and used AGAIN, just in time to create fear before the critical 2026 Midterm elections.  DON’T give in to FEAR and PANIC!

In addition to what I have discussed today more specifically targeted to reducing risk of Hantavirus, another ssRNA viral illness, you may want to consider our other natural medicines with our top quality, cGMP-compliant professional formulas: TruMitochondrial™ Boost,  Tru B™ Complex Full Spectrum, and TruProBiotic™ Daily to replenish critical bifidobacteria depleted by COVID shots, viral illnesses, and antibiotic therapy.
